Students Celebrate a Year of Learning Through Sport at Sport + STEM Year-End Celebration Presented by IBM

The energy at MLSE LaunchPad was at a high as students from across the Toronto District School Board came together to celebrate another successful year of Sport + STEM presented by IBM.

The year-end event brought participants from schools across the program together for a day of hands-on learning and fun. From creating slime through chemistry experiments to building healthy yogurt parfaits and taking part in sport activities on the court, students explored STEM concepts in engaging ways that brought classroom lessons to life.

The event capped off another impactful year for Sport + STEM presented by IBM, which helps Grade7 and 8 students discover the value of academics through sport and physical activity. By connecting curriculum concepts to movement-based learning experiences, the program builds confidence in STEM subjects while fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. This year, Sport+ STEM reached 368 students across eight schools.

“Before the program started, I thought STEM was science and like experiments I didn’t think there was so much more than just doing classwork with it,” one grade 8 student said. “Coming here totally opened my eyes up to STEM. We learned so much about how STEM ties into sport and our daily lives and it was really just a great experience”

Throughout the school year, students explored a wide range of STEM concepts through sport. Soccer activities were used to teach fractions, football lessons introduced coding principles and syntax, basketball drills demonstrated the engineering design process, and volleyball activities helped students understand how cell systems and the immune system work together.

"This is a great way to teach students who don't really have the attention span in the classroom difficult and important subject matter," shared one participating teacher.

Students echoed that sentiment, highlighting how physical activity helped bring classroom concepts to life.

“When we were playing volleyball for that unit … when you hit the ball to the other side it was like all the different parts that your body uses to like fight off bacteria and diseases,” said one grade 8 student. “So you were passing to kind of set up the other cells to help fight off the disease.”

Since joining the program as a presenting partner in 2021, IBM has helped expand opportunities for young people to explore STEM in ways that are engaging, accessible, and relevant to their everyday lives. Through the partnership, students are introduced to concepts that can spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage future exploration of STEM-related pathways.

As students wrapped up a day of learning, movement, and celebration at MLSE LaunchPad, the event served as a reminder that STEM education doesn't have to be confined to a classroom. Through Sport + STEM presented by IBM, youth are discovering that some of the most meaningful learning can happen while they're moving, collaborating, and having fun.

By connecting academics with physical activity, the program continues to help young people build confidence in themselves, their abilities, and the possibilities that lie ahead.
