Coach Dane has dedicated his life to empowering and elevating youth in his community, and through his work at MLSE LaunchPad he has been able to continue to make an impact and share his top notch skills with many of Toronto’s kids and their families.
Raised in the Jane & Finch neighbourhood of Toronto, Dane began working at Toronto Community Housing, where he coached sports to the local kids. He brought innovation and change to the organization by partnering with KickStart to create programs in twelve neighbourhoods across the city.
Coach dane is one of those guys, he’s a pillar in his community especially in the west end.
It was during this time that he was first introduced to various members of the MLSE Foundation staff, who at the time were in the process of opening MLSE LaunchPad. Dane stood out as someone who fully embodies MLSE LaunchPad’s mission of being more than a gym, a place where kids can realize their potential through sports, and was hired as one of the first coaches for the space.
This year has been especially challenging for children and youth. In response, the City, MLSE Foundation and MLSE LaunchPad introduced two new summer programming initiatives. Coach Dane and other MLSE LaunchPad coaches, alongside City recreation staff, offered a variety of sport skills workshops in basketball, soccer, football and ball hockey. The workshops provided a range of instructional and recreational activities that encourage skill development.
A lot of youth face barriers in a lot of at-risk communities. Covid just added on to the barrier.
In addition to regular programming Coach Dane is currently working on raising funds for school supplies for elementary, secondary and post-secondary school students in the Jane & Finch neighbourhood, who have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We made a commitment to the community for over eight years, and we can’t let COVID cancel that commitment
