MLSE Foundation was recognized at the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards at One World Observatory in New York on Wednesday, receiving the Sport for Sustainable Cities & Communities award for the Regent Park Athletic Grounds. The 2017 Beyond Sport Global Awards celebrate, support, raise awareness and provide funding for ways sport is being used to help make the Global Goals for sustainable development a reality.

The Regent Park Athletic Grounds, officially unveiled in June 2016, are a key highlight of the third phase of the overall neighbourhood revitalization of Regent Park and have become a sports destination for the local community and Torontonians of all ages. The 2.8-acre (1.1-hectare) grounds are a model of an effective public-private partnership, receiving capital funding from MLSE Foundation and the City of Toronto, as well as additional support from The Daniels Corporation and Toronto Community Housing. The state-of-the-art facility provides a refurbished hockey rink, a new basketball court, a running track, a field house and an artificial turf soccer/cricket pitch.

“MLSE Foundation is honoured to receive this prestigious recognition from Beyond Sport, a global leader in sustainable social change through sport,” said Aris Kaplanis, Chair, MLSE Foundation. “We look forward to continuing to support the growth of our programs and the opportunity to further our impact on youth in the Greater Toronto Area.”

Beyond Sport is a global organization that promotes, supports and celebrates the use of sport to address social issues in communities around the world. Since 2009, Beyond Sport has held major events in cities around the world and provided over $5.5 million worth of funding and support to projects over six continents addressing a range of social issues. On May 22, Beyond Sport named the Official Shortlist for the 2017 awards. In addition to this award, MLSE Foundation was also shortlisted for the honour of Best Corporate Campaign or Initiative in Sport for Good for MLSE LaunchPad.

The Beyond Sport Global Awards were held as part of Beyond Sport United, a two-day event held across New York bringing together leading organizations and activists to discuss and shape the role of sports in social movement advocacy and activism.
