MLSE FOUNDATION RECEIVES $300,000 DONATION FROM SCOTIABANK FOR MLSE LAUNCHPAD

1/6/2017 11:00:00 AM
MLSE Foundation has received a $300,000 donation from Scotiabank for MLSE LaunchPad, as announced during a cheque presentation and community event at the Regent Park South Rink on Friday morning. MLSE Foundation Executive Director Michael Bartlett, Toronto Maple Leafs Alumnus Darcy Tucker, Scotiabank Vice President of Sponsorship and Philanthropy Jacquie Ryan and youth hockey players were present for the announcement. The donation has allowed MLSE LaunchPad to construct one of three multisport courts within the facility.

“This generous gift, along with the other funding we have received, will ensure the MLSE LaunchPad is a place for youth to reach their fullest potential through sport, education and social change,” said Tanya Mruck, Executive Director, MLSE LaunchPad. “Our sport courts will be used to encourage physical activity and develop skills, benefiting the youth of Toronto for years to come.”

In April 2016, MLSE Foundation, Toronto Community Housing and the City of Toronto unveiled the plan to transform 259 Jarvis Street into MLSE LaunchPad, a 42,000 square foot youth-focused facility set to open in 2017. The facility will be the first collaborative space in North America to leverage sport, education and research to promote social change and will feature multi-purpose sport courts, classrooms and a teaching kitchen. Programming will focus on four pillars with sport at the core: healthy body, healthy mind, ready for school and ready for work.

“Scotiabank is proud to partner with MLSE Foundation as the sponsor of the Toronto Maple Leafs Sport Court,” said Jacquie Ryan, Vice President of Sponsorship and Philanthropy at Scotiabank. “We are committed to helping young people reach their full potential both on and off the ice. Young people are our future leaders and Scotiabank’s goal is to ensure that they have the necessary skills and resources they need to support their success. The Scotiabank-supported sport court is an example of our commitment in action. It’s a space for youth to learn important life skills – like teamwork – through the game of hockey.”
Since launching in 2009, MLSE Foundation has invested more than $24 million into the Toronto community. Together with its community partners, they have positively impacted the lives of youth and their families through sports grants, programs and facility revitalizations.
