Learn about ProAction Cops & Kids' hockey program

10/25/2016 10:40:41 AM
PC Derek Ma and other officers from 32 Division Community Response Unit embarked on another season of the Junior Blues Hockey Program. Over the course of the winter months, students were taught the basic hockey fundamentals. Eventually, the standing led to students taking small strides on the ice, which then transpired into students learning crossovers, stopping, and skating backwards. By the end of the season, all the students had noticeably improved since Day 1. Every child, including the youngest on the ice was able to skate up and down the ice chasing after the puck.

Below is a quote from a program officer. Through engaging the youth in a fun and informal atmosphere, officers were able to reduce any tension, apprehension, or nervousness that may have existed. The participants identified with officers and were able to see them as regular people as opposed to simply uniform to be feared. A young boy who was extremely shy and struggling at school with a learning disability, was able to gain some confidence, independence, and became more vocally engaged due to the positive team environment. Another participant who had previously lacked discipline became a leader amongst his peers. By the end of the program, all participants excitedly attended the arena and were able to greet each officer by name with an air of friendship and genuine affection."
